Same story… A mass shooting in the United States and the headlines ask why? Why has did it happen and what was the cause. The question often directed at the commonly lone gunperson who has taken the coward’s way out leaving only their past records to judge their motivations. Yet the main reason and the main cause is the controversial issue of gun control.
Because of the controversy about the gun control issue it is often then cases the solutions to these problems is aimed at the perpetrators and what warning signs were missed to prevent these events for occurring. In this case the killer didn’t show any obvious warning signs and even if he did would anyone foresee what occurred, the answer is sadly no.
As the warnings signs are all too common, as outside the small minority, most with these alleged indicators not even contemplating conducting anything illegal. This makes it impossible to prevent these events occurring by trying to second guess the future actions of individuals unless there is some factual direct evidence of an individual planning such an attack.
What is a lot clear, in each of these instances has been the lax almost non-existent gun control laws that are current upheld by the constitution in the United States giving citizens the right to bear arms. Teenagers and college students have been able to have quick and easy access to a range of weapons that are heavily restricted in other countries.
Using the constitutional argument forgets the facts of the situation. Those writing the constitution at the time did not have the foresight to see the 21st century where easy access to firearms is needless and damaging to society. In the middle of a civil war such a concept makes some sense but in today’s society it has no place. The constitution for the United States contains the other important provision to change the laws to go with the times.
This is a great example where it should be used to update to the times removing the old civil war thinking to update to the problems of today. How many more lives needlessly need to be lost before the American public starts standing up for their right to live in a society that restricts access to firearms so they can live in a much safer society?
It only a matter of time before the masses say enough is enough, the sooner the better.
